Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the establishment of independent commissions after the 19th amendment led to the successful implementation of anti-narcotic programmes in the country.
Addressing an event in Bulathsinhala yesterday (Feb 25), the Prime Minister claimed that the strengthening of the police department resulted in large-scale narcotics seizures which were recorded between 2017 and 2019.
Speaking on the same lines, he stressed that voicing opposition against the independent police commission will have a negative impact on anti-narcotic campaigns and as a result would create room for an increase in the number of drug racketeers in the country.
"The police commission was transformed into an independent body since the implementation of the 19th amendment to the constitution" insisted Mr. Wickremesinghe.
The Prime Minister then added that Makandure Madush was arrested following a secret arrest operation that was carried out following talks with the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Mr Wickremsinghe further stressed that the judiciary and the police must be strengthened even further in order to implement more anti-narotic laws and programmes.
