The Indian government has agreed to release 18 Sri Lankan fishermen who had been arrested for allegedly entering its waters unlawfully.
Issuing a statement, the Fisheries Ministry said that 24 fishermen including six from the South, and 18 from the North had been arrested by Indian authorities recently.
Accordingly, the ministry said it had requested the Indian government through the foreign ministry to release the fishermen in view of the Hindu Deepawali Festival.
The Indian government had then agreed to release the Northern fishermen who are expected to celebrate the festival which falls tomorrow.
However, their boats would be confiscated by the Indian authorities, the statement read.
