Strict measures will be taken against those who act in manner to mislead the public and the defence units by spreading false news, the National Media Centre said.
Issuing a special statement, head of the Centre, Dinesh Dodangoda said that measures will be taken by Police and Security Forces to apprehend those involved in spreading false content on WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and websites thereby causing panic among the people. The statement called on the public to refrain from spreading unverified false information.
The statement notes that the law could be enforced on such individuals since the Emergency regulations are in effect. Those found guilty of engaging in such misleading acts face sentenced between 3 to 5 years of imprisonment.
