An inmate has been arrested with cyanide and two surgical syringes at the Welikada prison by officers attached to the Western Province Prisons Intelligence Division.
The arrest was set in motion after intelligence officers were tipped-off regarding these items which were handed over to an inmate at the prison yesterday (Apr 08).
The suspect has been identified as S. Pushpa Kumara alias 'Marala Suranga'. He has been remanded over a drug-related offence, police said.
Upon questioning, the suspect revealed the syringes and the cyanide were brought into the prison in order to kill two other inmates who were his enemies.
The syringes and the cyanide have been handed over to the Borella police and will be sent to the Government Analysts Department for further investigations.
