The Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) secured power in the Batticaloa Municipal Council (MC) today during its inaugural session.
The council's inaugural session was held this morning under Eastern Province Local Government Commissioner M.I.M. Saleem.
When it came to electing the council's Chairperson, ITAK proposed Thiyagarajah Saravanabavan while the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) proposed the name of Sivalingam Somasundaram.
During the subsequent vote, Mr Thiyagarajah was duly elected as the council's new Chairperson with 25 votes. Mr Somasundaram received only 11 votes.
