The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today is to seek clarification from President Maithripala Sirisena about the pledge abolish the Executive Presidential system. JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a press conference today that they hope to meet with the President to ascertain about the status of abolishing the Executive Presidential system as it has been more than two years after the promise was given. He said through the 19th amendment, so far only a few amendments to the Executive Presidential system has been made though the mandate was given to abolish the system. ‘There is an opportunity go for a referendum on this issue and this will be the opportunity to obtain a two thirds majority. This is the ideal opportunity for it.”, he said.
