Kalpitiya Police say they have arrested the navy sailor who shot and killed a navy officer and injured two others following a workplace dispute.
The suspect was arrested after handing himself over to the Ichchankaduwa navy camp in Kalpitiya early this morning (30).
The incident had occurred at the camp of the naval detachment stationed at Kalpitiya-Mohoththuwarama island. The officer who was shot died at the scene while the two injured navy personnel were admitted to the Kalpitiya Hospital for treatment. One of the injured who was in a serious condition was subsequently transferred to the Puttalam Hospital for further treatment.
The sailor who carried out the shooting had disappeared immediately afterwards along with his service weapon. The navy and police conducted a search operation throughout the island yesterday to locate him but to no avail.
The suspect handed himself over to naval authorities this morning and he was then transferred to the custody of the Kalpitiya police. According to police, the suspect has confessed that he had hidden the firearm he used to carry out the shooting at Mohoththuwarama island.
Kalpitiya police are investigating.
