The Kayankerni Reef and its adjacent marine habitats have been gazetted by Tourism Minister John Amaratunga under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance as a new marine sanctuary from April 11.
An expanse of 953 hectares of land within the Korale Pattu - North Divisional Secretary’s Division in the Batticaloa District, Eastern Province and the maritime zone adjacent to that area of land has been declared as the Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary.
The Eastern Coast and parts of Kakankerni reef have recorded a high abundance and diversity of fish. including 50 species of corals and over 200 species of fish have been recorded in the reef.
