The Attorney General today (March 13) withdrew his petition filed in the Court of Appeal seeking to amend the sentences imposed on the accused involved in the murder of British aid worker Khuram Sheikh and the rape of his girlfriend.
The Attorney General told court that the decison to withdraw his petition was taken following, the decision of former Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sampath Chandrapushpa Vidanapathirana and four others to withdraw their own appeal petitions calling to suspend the sentences passed on them.
The petition was taken up before a two member judge bench including judges Shiran Gunaratne and Priyantha Fernando.
The petition filed by the Attorney General initially requested the High Court to withdraw the 20-year prison sentence passed on the accused and to pass either the sentence of death or sentence the accused to life imprisonment.
