Kumar Gunaratnam released from prison

News

Leader of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Kumar Gunaratnam was released from the Anuradhapura Prison today after completing his term for violation of Emigration and Immigration laws.

He was arrested in November last year and later sentenced to one year in prison after he overstayed his tourist visa.

Gunaratnam, who served as Trincomalee District Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) during the 1987-89 insurgency, later broke away from the movement along with other elements of the JVP to form the FSP.

After residing in Australia for several years, he returned to the country during the last Presidential Election in 2015.

The FSP is currently pushing for Gunaratnam, who is an Australian citizen, to be granted Sri Lankan citizenship and allowed to engage in politics in the country. Accordingly, he has been granted a temporary visa while his application for citizenship is being processed.
