The National Police Commission (NPC) approved the transfer of Kurunegala police deputy inspector general (DIG) Kithsiri Jayalath to Puttalam today (Aug 9), NPC Secretary Nishantha Weerasinghe told Times Online.
Mr. Weerasinghe noted that the transfer had been made upon the request of acting police chief Chandana Wickramaratne since there had been no DIG for the Puttalam district.
DIG Jayalath is alleged to have fabricated a story which is alleged to have resulted in the arrest of Kurunegala teaching hospital doctor Mohamed Shafi who was granted bail recently.
CID Director Shani Abyesekara told the press yesterday that it had sought a disciplinary probe on DIG Jayalath and Kurunegala superintendent Mahinda Dissanayake over their conduct during the investigations against the doctor.
Dr Shafi attached to the Kurunegala teaching hospital had been arrested over charges of sterilising women, unlawful acquisition of assets, and links to terrorism.
However, the CID had maintained that it had not found any evidence so far to prove the charges against him.
