About 450,000 doses of rabies vaccines will be imported to Sri lanka to vaccinate street dogs during field programme held during 2015 and 2016, Media Minster and Cabinet Spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake said today.
He said that the Department of Animal Production and Health has decided to implement a programme with a target of eradicating the rabies infected by dogs in 2020.
The Minister quoting World health organization Statistics said that the disease could be eradicated with in tree months if 70 percent of dogs were vaccinated. Accordingly the proposal made by P. Harrison, Minister of Rural Economic Affairs, to procure 450,000 doses of rabies vaccine required launch of programme, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
