Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has said that the Sri Lankan parliament continues to remain as an example to other countries in terms of parliamentary traditions despite the shocking incidents in the recent past.
Addressing a ‘Fight For Justice’ felicitation ceremony as the Chief Guest today (Jan 30), the Speaker said that civic society groups which put aside political differences and campaigned for democracy had played a pivotal role in retaining Sri Lanka’s respect in the international community.
He also said that the civic groups which came to the forefront under the leadership of the late Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero have joined hands and succeeded in creating a social reformation.
“The present elderly society must ensure that the unruly scenes which occurred in the recent past should not be repeated amongst the younger generation” Mr. Jayasuriya emphasised during his address.
He also said that politicians such as MP Palitha Range Bandara who did not bow down to money had managed to act against financial inducements which were offered as crossover bribes during the 51 day struggle since October 26.
Speaker Jayasuriya was awarded the highest felicitation prize at the event while MP Palitha Range Bandara, Dambara Amila Thero and several others also received awards.
