Leave for all CEB employees cancelled

News

Leave for all employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has been cancelled from today (13) to September 20, the CEB has announced.

The announcement came after a trade union collective made up of CEB employees said they would launch a two-day island-wide strike commencing from 12 noon today.

The unions warned that they would not undertake repairs in the wake of electricity breakdowns during the duration of the two-day strike. The only exception would be for Government hospitals, they added.

The CEB unions are engaging in the strike over several key demands, including fixing salary anomalies between the salary scale of CEB engineers and other employees.

Meanwhile, issuing a media release yesterday, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy stated that a committee had already been appointed to look into issues raised by CEB unions and all unions had been invited to present their proposals to this committee. The statement added that solutions to these issues would be considering these proposals.

In light of this, the Ministry stated it was unfair that the trade union collective has decided to launch such a strike.
