LG bodies to resume Colombo waste management from January

Waste management in Colombo City, with identified responsibilities, will be vested back with local authorities from January 1, 2018, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka stated. 

The Minister made the announcement while participating at the 'Colombo City Beautification Awards - 2017' held at the Water's Edge in Battaramulla. 

He praised the services rendered by all, from the seniormost official to the labourer for their work in managing the city's garbage crisis in the wake of the Meethotamulla disaster. 

Most people were of the opinion that the garbage crisis could not be solved without the involvement of the armed forces, but in this case, the armed forces were only involved in reviewing the situation and the work was undertaken by officials and workers, he pointed out. 

Minister Ranawaka further said that work on the Aruwakkalu sanitary landfill would be completed methodically with the aim of decisively resolving the garbage issue.
