The UNP Working Committee today unanimously approved the name of Ranjith Madduma Bandara as the the General Secretary of the alliance to be launched under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
"There was no objections for my name as the General Secretary of the alliance", Mr Madduma Bandara told journalists outside the UNP headquarters Sirikotha.
He said that the issue of the symbol of the alliance was discussed, but not finalised.
However, other sources said that a majority in the Working Committee were of the opinion that the Elephant symbol should be made use of.
However, the faction supporting Mr Premadasa are insisting of a new symbol for the alliance.
Dr Harsha de Silva told the media that Mr Premadasa expressed disappointment that the UNP was still insisting on conditions. 'He was of the opinion that if the UNP wanted to contest the elections they can go ahead as they have a leader and alliance."
Meanwhile a three member committee has been appointed to decide on the other positions in the alliance.
