Mahesh Senanayake's manifesto to be revealed next week

Former Army Commander turned Presidential Candidate Mahesh Senanayake, today (Oct 8) said he would reveal his manifesto in all three languages next week.

“We are in the final stages of preparing the manifesto, ” Senanayake said at his first media conference after submitting nominations as a Presidential candidate by the National Election Commission.

The former Army Chief will contest from the National People’s Party (NPP) under the symbol of a ‘light bulb’ which he said was symbolic of giving light to the country which is facing darkness.

“The current political system is outdated, corrupt and has proved to be a failure. This is why people have divided themselves based on religions, economic standards, and classes,” he observed.

Senanayake hinted that one of the promises in his manifesto would be to reduce the size of the cabinet which stands at 30.

He pledged to increase local production, maximize exports, strengthen the agriculture industry and share the benefits among the people.

“We are confident that it could be done within a short period,” the Presidential candidate remarked adding that he would focus on economic security which is an important part of national security.

Among other promises he made were to strengthen the education and health sectors, and to establish an efficient public transport system.

“We will create a revolution in the education sector while protecting the country’s culture and history,” Senanayake emphasised.

He said he would empower the youth through education, and protect the dignity of children and women under his rule.

The foreign policy of his government, the NPP candidate said without giving details, would be a strong one which is favourable to country.

The former Army Chief stressed that he would eradicate corruption and fraud, by being an “independent and unbiased President” who does not pledge loyalties to any political party.
