Army Chief of Staff Major General Shavendra Silva has been appointed as the 23rd Army Commander by the President today (Aug 19).
He replaces Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake whose term ended yesterday (Aug 18).
Mr. Senanayake had been appointed to the post in 2017 before being granted an extension which came to an end yesterday.
Maj. Gen. Silva Silva commanded the 58 Division of the Army operating from Welioya during the final phase of the war in 2009. The UN has accused the 58 Division of grave violations of International Humanitarian Law.
In 2012, Major Silva was removed from a top United Nations peacekeeping advisory committee because of allegations against his conduct during the final phase of the war.
