Very heavy rainfall (about 300mm) is expected in the Northern, North Central, North Western provinces and Trincomalee district, the Meteorology Department warned in a bad weather advisory.
Issuing a red alert to the above provinces and district, the Department requested public to take precaution to prevent damage from extreme weather conditions. Strong wind, lightning is also expected to accompany heavy rainfall.
Welioya in Mullaitivu district received the highest rainfall (287 mm) during the past 24 hours followed by Alampil in Mullaitivu district (205 mm) and Gomarankadawala in Trincomalee district receiving 130 mm.
According to Meteorology Department, 50-100 mm rain is considered fairly heavy rainfall, 100-150 mm heavy rainfall and above 150 mm considered very heavy rainfall.
