Minister Ravi Karunanayake today (Apr 10) assured the public that power cuts would not be imposed after April 10.
He made this remarks following an observation tour around the Kelanitissa Power Station this afternoon.
"We are currently identifying methods to overcome the shortage of 300 megawatts of electricity which has been recurring throughout the past years as well," the Minister of Power and Energy pointed out.
He added that the Kelanitissa power station could have produced between 500-600 MW of additional power if prior measures to this effect were taken.
Further, he insisted that the government is taking measures to construct short, medium and long-term plans in order to address the power crisis.
Mr. Karunanayake said that measures to implement a long-term programme which is anticipated to generate between 3000 MW - 3500 MW of electricity to the national grid will be put before cabinet next week.
As a part of the medium term measures in resolving this issue, the Minister said that steps will be taken to improve the functionality of power stations by looking into timely repairs.
Further, Mr Karunanayake said that efforts are currently underway as a short term measure to generate between 500MW - 600 MW of additional electricity towards the national grid.
