A total of 245 drivers have been arrested over drunk driving offences during the last 24 hours commencing from 6 am yesterday.
This is in addition to 10,170 cases which have been filed against such offences, Police Spokesman S.P. Ruwan Gunasekara said.
Earlier this week, police announced that 25,000 breathalyser devices will be distributed among all police stations in the country.
These devices would be used to detect drivers who are found to be driving under the influence of liquor.
The Police Department has cautioned the public to refrain from driving after consuming liquor especially at parties. Those under the influence of liquor have been urged to utilise public transport, taxis or to accompany a driver, police said.
