More than 70 acres of forest land have been destroyed due to fires which erupted at two forest reserves in the Wellawaya area yesterday (Aug 29).
Several species of fauna and flora at the Galbokka and Demataketiya reserves had been destroyed due to what police suspect is an act of arson.
Army personnel had doused the fire last night following a request made by the Disaster Management Centre's office in Monaragala to that effect.
However, it is reported that the dry condition and the heavy winds in the area had caused difficulties to contain the fire.
