The Colombo Commercial High Court today (Feb 26) ordered that if Parliamentarian Bandula Gunawardena failed to settle his Rs 1,200,000 loan to Pan Asia Bank, the MPs property down Jambugasmulla Mawatha in Nugegoda be sold in a public auction and the amount be recovered.
Mr. Gunawardena during proceedings claimed that he had placed his signature on the mortage forms mistakenly.
However, Judge Ashan Marikkar had dismissed the claims by pointing out that such an excuse could not be entertained from a person who had previously served as a tuition teacher.
The Parliamentarian, a one-time Finance Minister had obtained bank overdrafts and loans amounting to Rs 1,200,000 from Pan Asia Bank through four instalments.
The loans were obtained under the name of Alpha Digital (Pvt.) Ltd. – a company owned by Mr. Guawardena.
Accordingly, a case was filed against MP Gunawardena and Alpha Digital (Pvt.) Ltd. for failing to repay the loans and the interest to the bank.
The prosecution also claimed that the former Minister had mortgaged his house in Jambugasmulla Mawatha while obtaining the overdrafts and loans.
