MR issues special statement to the nation following his resignation as PM

News

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said that he had resigned from the post of Prime Minister since he had no intention in remaining in that position unless a general election was held.

"Since I had no intention of remaining  as Prime Minister wihtout a general election being held, and in order to not hamper the President in any way, I will resign from the position of Prime Minister and make way for the President to form a new government" the former President said while delivering his special address this morning.

Addressing a gathering of MPs at his residence in Wijerama today (Dec 15), Mr. Rajapaksa said he would comment on the Supreme Court verdict after studying it carefully.

The former President emphasized on the value of elections being held while saying that the law has been manipulated in a way to facilitate the postponing of elections indefinitely.

He said further, in his statement that the UNP has been taken hostage by the TNA in a bid to retain the UNP’s majority in Parliament.

Mr. Rajapaksa also charged that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had already drafted a new constitution that would see the country being divided into nine semi-independent federal units while also abolishing the executive presidency. He explained that this also meant that the Presidential election that is due to be held before December 09, 2019 will not be held.

The former President also proceeded to thank President Maithripala Sirisena for his bold decision on October 26.

Commenting on the future of the country, Mr. Rajapaksa said that the country is now confronted with the possibility of moving forward without holding an election.

“The UNP government borrowed 20.7 billion US dollars in foreign currency loans also within a period of three and a half years” he said while adding that he had no idea as to how the loans would be paid back.

Furthermore, Mr. Rajapaksa said the people would one day “definitely get the change they desire”.

He also said that the main aim in the immediate future is to go in for a provincial council poll while adding that the challenge that they face is to minimise the damage that could be done by the destructive forces that are now seeking to restore their positions.
