Navy facilitated the repatriation of seven Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested by the Indian Coast Guard for trespassing into Indian territorial waters, a statement from Navy said. The fishermen and their trawler Kavisha Putha – III, were apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Vaibhav’ on 04th April, and the trawler was retained at Tuticorin since 6th April.
The fishermen were produced in the Ramanathapuram Judicial Court and remanded at the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai, and subsequently released on April 21.
The fishermen had gone fishing from the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour on 6th March, onboard Kavisha Putha- III (IMUL/A/88/CHW). The names of the arrested fishermen: NMDK Fernando; PDM Fernando; PAPP Attanayake; MAPP Attanayake; WASS Tissera; WAASS Kumara; WSR Fernando.
Sri Lanka Navy Ship Edithara –II, received the repatriated fishermen and trawler at the IMBL, off Puttalam this morning from the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Adesh’and provided close escort to Dikowita.
