The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to conduct a research on landslides in Sri Lanka.
“The research will be carried out for three years. But we hope to extend this period,” Dr. Gamini Jayatissa, the NBRO’s Director for Landslide Research & Risk Management Division said.
The USGS has donated three landslide monitoring units with which experts will gather data on landslides to identify areas which could be affected by this disaster.
The NBRO will also decide on methods to mitigate landslides and introduce early warning systems in the country.
Dr. Jayatissa told Times Online that one monitoring device has been installed in Kalutara, while another would be installed in Badulla in due course. The location to install the third device is yet to be identified.
Landslides have posed severe risks for those living in hilly regions. Three persons died in a landslide in Walapane last week after the North East monsoon made landfall resulting in heavy downpours in the country.
The NBRO Director said a team of experts from USGS have arrived in the country and are training local officials on handling the donated equipment.
