New agreement raises daily wage of estate workers
The daily wage of estate workers will be increased to Rs 730 following a joint agreement reached between estate worker trade unions and estate owners. The agreement was signed this afternoon.
Estate workers have been staging protests throughout the country during the past several weeks demanding that their daily wage be increased to Rs 1000. However, estate owners had emphasized such an increase was impossible given the current economic situation.
Trade unions and estate owners eventually reached a compromise whereby the daily wage was increased to Rs 730.
