Senior Deputy Inspector General Lionel Gunathilake assumed duties as the new Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Force (STF) today.
The vacancy was created after former STF chief senior DIG M.R. Latheef retired on February 04.
Senior DIG Gunathilake joined the police force in 1985 as a Sub Inspector and a year later shifted to the STF.
After receiving a promotion in 1995 as a Chief Inspector he reverted back to the Police and went on to serve the Kebithigollewa, Mahawa and Anuradhapura areas.
In 2003 he was promoted as an ASP, in 2011 SP and 2014 as a SSP. He served the Hatton, Kegalle and Kebithigollewa divisions.
He returned to the STF on April 6, 2019 and was promoted as DIG in November of the same year.
