President Maithripala Sirisena addressing at the annual prize giving ceremony of Asoka Vidyalaya held at the BMICH today said that no one will be allowed to hide behind laws, rights or privileges to promote indiscipline or promote misbehaviour.
Recalling the recent incident in a school where a student brought a mobile phone which had indecent contents to the classroom and re-emphasized that Laws, Rights and Privileges should not be a cover for promoting indiscipline and inappropriate behavior in the country.
President Sirisena said he will stand up for the teacher who had to face difficulties by trying to redress the students for their own future’s sake:” A special inquiry will be held into the alleged incident”, he added.
Reminding the stern punishment the student received from teachers in his day, President urged both parents and students not to use Rights and Privileges in the modern-day society in a wrong way.
President Sirisena, who arrived at the BMICH this morning, was ceremoniously received by the Principal Y. Yasarathna and the staff of the School. The scouts of the Asoka Vidyalaya accorded a Guard of Honour to the President.
The President also presented awards and prizes to students with performance. Two teachers of the school were felicitated at this event for reporting to work without taking any leave.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
The deadline for online applications to the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has been extended until July 12, the Department of Examinations said.
