Accepting nomination papers to contest upcoming General Elections is to close today by 12.30 pm, an official from the Election Commission said. Accordingly, political parties and independent groups can submit their nomination papers at respective District Election department offices.
By yesterday, at least 44 political parties and 31 independent groups filed nomination papers whereas 264 groups made deposits. In Polonnaruwa district, only two groups made deposits while Vanni marked the highest number of 25 groups made deposits.
Meanwhile, police curfew imposed on the Puttalam district and the Kochchikada police division was removed at 8am this morning. Curfew will be reimposed again at 2pm. Police Headquarters stated that the curfew was being lifted in order to ensure that handing over of nominations for the parliamentary election is not disrupted.
