Normalcy in the Northern province was affected due to a hartal staged by the trade unions, civil society organizations urging the government to take immediate actions to stop sexual abuses against women and children in the region.
Transport, banking, shops were closed in Kilinochchi and Vavuniya districts bring the daily life into stand still. The hartal was arranged for demanding justice for the recent killing of a 14 year old school student in Vavuniya.
The organizers pointed out that women in the former war torn area have been subjected to sexual abuses in various forms and the recent killing of the student is the third such incident in a week.
Bus services, markets, business ventures were closed in view of the calling for hartal. The Ceylon Teachers Union, Student Union of Jaffna University and Bar association of Jaffna extended their support for the hartal.
