Lawyers in the North and Eastern province launched a collective boycott campaign for a second day today demanding action against those who violated a court order issued by the Mullaithivu magistrates court over the burial of the Chief incumbent of the Gurukanda temple in Chemmalai, Mullaithivu.

Regional Lawyers Unions in North and some parts of East protested in front of their respective court complex boycotting court proceedings until a written assurance from the  Attorney General (AG) regarding the next steps to be taken over the incident. The protest is expected to continue until Friday.

Lawyers alleged a group of monks led by General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero visited the temple yesterday and carried out a cremation ceremony of a deceased monk despite a court order issued by the Mullaithivu magistrate instructing concerned parties not to perform any funeral rights until further notice.

Protestors argued that a court order had been violated constituting contempt of court and that charges be filed against those who violated the order.

Further, the lawyers claimed that two of the lawyers who appeared on behalf of a Hindu Kovil were assaulted by the group while Police was deployed at the premises.

On Monday, the Mullaithivu Magistrates Courts issued an order preventing any funeral rights being performed for a deceased monk within the premises of the disputed temple premises till the next day after the Trustees of the Hindu Kovil sought a court directive not to allow such practices.

The following day, Court issued a directive to conduct funeral rights at a nearby beach area close to the temple. However, Ven Gnanasara Thero visited the place and carried out the cremation against the court order. He claimed later that he did not receive the court order banning the cremation in time.
