The ruling party members of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) have started a protest demanding the immediate release of whom they call “ Tamil political prisoners” who are languishing in jails without any charges. The NPC councilors started the protest in front of Naallur Kandaswamy Temple in Jaffna this morning and it is schedule to continue until 3 p.m today. One of their demand is that since the three decades war ended in 2009, all these prisoners who are in custody for more than ten years should be given general amnesty or a fast track trial should be initiated immediately to prosecute them in courts. Chairman of NPC, C.V.K. Sivagnanam along with twenty councilors are taking part in the protest. The government has reiterated that at least 300 Tamil prisoners who were arrested under terrorism charges are still in custody and there are no political prisoners in custody.
