The Navy today said they had spotted an oil patch, believed to have leaked from the fuel tank supplying fuel to the oil tanker on fire off the south eastern coast.
The Navy said the oil patch had been spotted in sea about a kilometer away from the ship.
However, the navy maintained that the mail storage area which is holding 270,000 Mt of fuel was still not affected.
The Navy said, the fire was under control by use of chemicals and water.
Meanwhile the Attorney General’s Department has informed the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) to look into the possibility of moving the oil tanker out of the Sri Lankan territorial waters.
