A suspect with gold weighing over 109g in his possession was arrested today during a special search carried out with the Police Crime Division in Mannar with the coordination of the Navy yesterday, Navy said.
According to the Navy, based on a tip-off received by the North Central Naval Command, a group of naval personnel attached to the command conducted this operation with the assistance of the Police Crime Division in the town area of Mannar. During this operation a suspicious person at the main bus stand was searched and the security personnel managed to find over 109g of gold in his possession.The suspect along with gold was taken into custody for carrying gold without a valid pass.
The value of the seized consignment of gold has been estimated to be over Rs. 1.1 million. Meanwhile, the suspect who is a 37 year old resident of Darapuram in Mannar together with gold was handed over to the Mannar Police for onward investigation.
