One prison inmate was killed and four others sustained injuries when prison officers opened fire during a disturbance that took place at the Anuradhapura Prison this evening (21).
Police stated that inmates had staged a protest inside the prison this evening and there had been a disturbance when prison officers attempted to control it.
The statement added that several prisoners had attempted to use the opportunity to escape and this had prompted prison officers to open fire, resulting in five inmates suffering gunshot wounds. They were admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital where one inmate succumbed to his injuries.
Police added that no inmates had escaped during the incident and that officers from the Anuradhapura Prison, Riot Squad and the Special Task Force (STF) have been posted outside the prison to ensure that inmates engaged in the disturbance do not come out of the prison.
