Opposition parties today questioned in Parliament the manner in which notorious underworld gang member Makandure Madush was killed today morning though the police claimed that he was killed during a shoot-out by another gang while on their way to recover drugs hidden in a flat at Maligawatta today morning.
The post-mortem on Madush was conducted this afternoon and Colombo Additional Magistrate Neranjana de Silva ordered that the body be handed over to Madush’s wife Jayamini Muthumali.
Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon claimed that, in order to detect drugs hidden at the Maligawatte flats, a police team from the CCD had accompanied Madush to the location when the gang had fired at the police killing Madush. Two policemen also received slight injuries, he said.
DIG Ajith Rohana claimed that the raid had been set up by getting Madush to call some of his associates so that the drugs could be detected.
However, NPP member Vjitha Herath and SJB member Nalin Bandara said in parliament that they were not satisfied about the explanation given about the manner Madush was killed.
Herath said that Madush while in custody had reportedly mentioned about the involvement of politicians in the drug trade, and questioned about the information he had provided.
