More than 100 army personnel were deployed to assist the Colombo Fire Brigade (CMC) to douse yesterday's (4) fire at the Bloemendhal garbage dump, Army Headquarters stated.
A media release by the Army said that troops of the 14th Division of Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) were deployed to assist the CMC Fire Brigade and members of the public. Even as at 8.00pm last night, the troops were still engaged in helping to douse the major fire.
A total of 148 Army personnel including 9 Officers belonging to 9 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Light Infantry (9 SLLI), 6 Gemunu Watch (6 GW) and 11 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (11 VIR) rushed to the scene soon after the fire began spreading on the instructions of Major General Sathyapriya Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West (SF-West) and under the supervision of Major General Ralph Nugera, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 14 Division and jumped into action with fellow fire fighters, the army stated.
With the support of other fire fighters, Army troops succeeded in containing further spread of the fire as the dusk fell by this evening.
