Over 80 daily short distance train journeys have been cancelled until March 19, Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) stated.
General Manager of Railways, Dilantha Fernando told Times Online that due to the prevailing situation and the special holidays which have been granted, the department has taken steps to cancel these short distance train journeys. Long distance trains however, will continue to operate as normal.
Mr Fernando stated that these cancellations may continue into next Monday (23) should the Government decide to extend the holiday further. He noted that SLR cannot absorb the financial losses that would come from operating trains as normal during extended holidays.
