PAFFREL calls for laws to impose a ceiling on expenditure for election campaigns

News

An election monitoring body has urged for laws to be passed before the next general election to limit a candidate’s expenditure for campaigning purposes.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, Director General of the People's Action For Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) movement, told a news briefing today (Aug 14) that a ceiling amount should be imposed for campaign expenditure.

Mr. Hettirachchi pointed out that information obtained through the Right to Information Act (RTI) has revealed that candidates who contested at the last provincial election had spent an average sum of Rs 40 million for election campaigns.

Accordingly, he said that legal action would be taken against such politicians.

The PAFFREL Executive Director also observed that the legitimacy of elections would be tarnished if laws are not passed to limit expenditure on election campaigns.
