Former Speaker and United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Chamal Rajapaksa has obtained a letter from the Parliament Secretary General confirming him to be a sitting MP, Parliament sources confirmed to Times Online.
Such a letter is needed in the event an MP is to contest the Presidential Election.
Meanwhile, UPFA MP Kumara Welgama has also obtained a letter from the Parliament Secretary General certifying that he is a sitting MP, it was also confirmed.
Earlier, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake had obtained a similar letter. Mr Dissanayake will be the JVP Presidential candidate at the upcoming election.
Several former Parliamentarians have also obtained letters from the Parliament Secretary-General in recent days certifying them to be former MPs. They are M.L.A.M. Hisbullah, Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara, Anuruddha Polgampola and Saman Sri Herath.
