Patrick Amarasinghe, considered the ‘Godfather of Entrepreneurship” in Sri Lanka, passed away on Thursday evening after a brief illness. The funeral will be held tomorrow Saturday. Mr. Amarasinghe was in the mid-80s. A man of many parts who has been described as an accountant, entrepreneur, exporter, trade chamber leader, nationalist and social entrepreneur, Mr. Amarasinghe ventured into entrepreneurship in the 1970s giving up a steady job in the private sector. He set up Woodplex to produce wooden toys and Furnifits using rubber wood for the first time to produce furniture and other durables, setting new trends in the office and household furniture industry. He was a founder of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Sri Lanka, the National Chamber of Exporters and the Young Entrepreneurs of Sri Lanka. (Feizal)
