The number of pedestrians killed in road accidents has exceeded 650 deaths in the first nine months this year, latest police statistics revealed.
Accordingly 681 people were killed in nine months as against 865 pedestrians killed throughout last year.
Anaylsis of accident staistics show that deaths of pedestrians accounted for over 25 per cent of road accident deaths annually.
The Police Media Spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara told sunday Times that negligence is the main cause for most of the accidents and a vast number using mobile phones while walking on the road is one of the contributory factors to the escalating accidents.
“We issue warning to the pedestrians and sometimes they are summoned by the area police station for special classes on road rules”,he said.
The Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety states that discussions are underway to find ways to rectify the offense made by the pedestrians which can result in unnecessary loss of lives.
