Cabinet approval has been granted to amend the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code to take action against false news distribution and and extremist statements.
Accordingly, an individual found guilty of false news distribution could be fined Rs 1 million and/or an imprisonment not exceeding five years.
Further the Cabinet approved amendments enabling fines and imprisonment to be imposed on those engaged in extremist statements.
Approval was granted after considering a proposal put foward by Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara in his capacity of acting Defence Minister.
