Issuing a special statement, UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in his first statement as Prime Minister following his swearing-in today, said the constitutional violation which took place through the dissolution of Parliament cannot be rectified by an election and that the intention now is to form a broad alliance to protect democracy and appealed to all to join hands.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said "We are determined to rectify shortcomings. We will take steps to expedite the litigations regarding frauds and corruption.¨ He further said that they have initiated discussions with a few political parties on the abolishing of the executive presidency.
He said the efforts will now be directed towards creating a strong democratic environment that cannot be suppressed by any external force.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said he saluted those citizens who came together to protect democracy, the constitution and the rights of the people. He said thousands of them came to the forefront of this fight as Sri Lankans, disregarding race, religion or political affiliation, and followed their conscience.
