Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will chair this year's Indian Ocean Conference which will take place on September 3 and 4 in the Maldives, the Prime Minister's office said.
The conference has been organised by the Indian Foundation along with the Maldivian government, and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore under the theme 'Securing the Indian Ocean Region: Traditional and Non-Traditional Challenges'.
According to the Prime Minister's office, Mr. Wickremesinghe would undertake the two-day official visit upon an invitation extended by Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih.
Matters concernings developing bilateral relations along with the regional and global challenges faced by the countries in the Indian Ocean region are expected to be discussed during the meeting, the Prime Minister's office noted.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
