Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will expedite legal action to obtain state patronage for the Mihintale Poson Perahera and to declare Poson as a National Festival.
The Prime Minister had taken this decision after considering certain requests made by the chief monk of the Mihintale Raja Maha Viharaya yesterday (Jun 16), the Prime Minister's office said.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister is expected to appoint a special committee to study the requests put forward by the chief monk.
These included naming the Mihintale Viharaya as a national heritage and several other matters concerning the Mihintale area which is visited by several devotees and the Poson Festival.
Ministers P Harrison and Chandrani Bandara have already been issued instructions to take relevant measures in order to address these requests, the Prime Minister's office noted.
