The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement to say the clash between the Inter University Student Federation(IUSF) and the Police was regrettable. The statement reads as follows Our attention has been drawn to newspaper reports with regard to a protest organized by the Inter University Student Federation(IUSF). The IUSF has not given prior notice of their planning to handover a letter to . They had informed to say that they would be coming to handover a letter to the University Grants Commission (UGC). But, all of a sudden they had changed their route and on arriving at Kollupitiya informed that they wanted to handover a letter to the Prime Minister's Office. Although they were invited to send five of their representatives to the Prime Minister's Office, they had got involved in a tussle with the police which resulted in an unfortunate situation. "It is very much regrettable to note the incident that had occurred. If the protesting students had peacefully allowed their representatives to come to the Prime Minister's office, an incident of this nature could have been averted.
