Officers attached to the Police Narcotics Bureau and the Special Task Force uncovered what it claimed to be Sri Lanka’s largest heroin racket valued at more than Rs 2.945 billion in Kollupitiya last night.
Two suspects, M.B. Mohamed Ajmeer and M.R. Mohamed Ruzni were also taken into custody over the possession of the narcotic.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had transported the heroin in two vans while concealing them in five travelling bags each.
The contraband weighed 294.49 kilograms, Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said adding that the suspects would be produced before the Fort Magistrate today with a request seeking a week-long detention to carry out further questioning.
“Most drug busts are carried out as a result of tip-offs provided by the public,” Police spokesman said commending the efforts of the media in creating awareness among people regarding narcotics.
