Police arrest 28 in connection with Hambantota protest

Police have so far arrested 28 suspects following a tense situation which took place near the Indian Consulate in Hambantota this morning (6).

Accordingly, 20 males, eight females and a vehicle used by the protesters have so far been taken into police custody.  

Three policemen have been injured in clashes with the demonstrators, police further added.

The protest, organized by the Joint Opposition (JO) was held against alleged plans to privatize the Magampura Port and the Mattala International Airport.

Clashes occurred when protesters tried to break down police barricades and march towards the Indian Consulate building in Hambantota. .
